Global Sport Institute Seed Grant Awardees Showcase Research Into Sex, Gender and Sexuality in Sport

In addition to the intensive in-house research and polling done at the Global Sport Institute, it is a core focus here at GSI to work across other departments and disciplines with the bright minds at Arizona State University to engage in interdisciplinary research into the world of sport.

With that mission in mind, the theme for the 2020-21 academic year at the Global Sport Institute is sex, gender and sexuality, which offers a ripe opportunity for exploration around physical science, psychology, social science and identity, and the arts -- plus much more. Our 2020-21 Seed Grant Awardees come from many backgrounds and areas of practice themselves, creating a diverse array of projects that we hope will serve our mission of using research and insight to improve the world through sport.

"It's far deeper than any one research lab can do," says Dr. Scott Brooks, the director of research at the Global Sport Institute. "We can call upon researchers at our university and at global partners to speak upon those critical issues that we all need to look at."

This research will materialize into published work in the coming months, at a critical juncture for American society and the global community as we begin to construct a roadmap for trans and gender non-conforming athletes, and consider other issues of gender and sex more keenly. In this way, it is the hope of the Global Sport Institute that the work of this year's class of Seed Grant Awardees can lead the way in our communities both inside and outside of sport.
