Grant Opportunities

The goal of the Global Sport Institute is to encourage a broad range of activities that deepen the knowledge base in virtually all areas of sport.

During the fall of each academic year, the Global Sport Institute works through the Research Development office at ASU to administer a seed grant program awarding up to $20,000 per project to promote the study of sport. Grants are typically awarded for projects that align with that academic year’s annual theme, although proposals on other sport-focused topics will be considered.

Eligible campus recipients are full-time, benefits-eligible employees or students of Arizona State University. Faculty at all levels, research scientists, post-doctoral researchers, staff members, and graduate and undergraduate students are eligible. Community members are also eligible but must have Arizona residency and a track record of work in the state.

Venture Challenge

Global Sport Venture Challenge

The Global Sport Institute has co-created the Global Sport Venture Development (GSVD) funding opportunity, a sport-focused track within ASU’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation program, Venture Devils. Venture Devils provides a formalized process to help budding entrepreneurs refine their business model, create a pitch and develop professional skills that will benefit them in the venture capital world.

Venture Devils applicants who submit a sport-related idea are placed in a specialized GSVD cohort.  Participants compete in the Global Sport Venture Challenge and pitch their ideas during Demo Day in either the fall or spring semesters. During each Demo Day, semi-finalists will receive $1,000 to support the continued development of their idea, which will be pitched in a final round competition at a subsequent Demo Day. In addition, each Demo Day will feature semi-finalist winners who will move on to compete for a final $5,000 grand prize.  Grand prize winners will also receive additional benefits such as further networking opportunities, mentorship, and visits to leading sports organizations.

Social Impact Challenge

Global Sport Social Impact Challenge

Think you can change the world through sport? We can help make your idea a reality.

The Global Sport Social Impact Challenge is a grant program that supports programs designed to positively shape the world through sport.  Any format for achieving this could be considered - community programs, educational opportunities, training and mentorship programs, building or converting sport facilities to better serve people who don’t have one nearby, forming a non-profit, starting a league, bringing a new sport to an area that doesn’t have access to it, you name it.

Through our partnership with ASU’s Venture Devils program, applicants will go through a structured eight-week process to help refine their idea, create an operating model, and pitch to potential supporters. A final pitch competition will determine the winning idea and award a grant of up to $10,000. Winners will also receive ongoing mentorship from professionals in the social entrepreneurship community.  To learn how to get the process started, visit the Venture Devils website or email globalsportsic@asu.edu for more information.
